Description:

The diary contains daily entries written by Annan between May 14, 1917 and October 1, 1917, starting with his voyage over to France, continuing through his service with the American Field Service, and documenting his trip home. The back of the diary contains names and addresses of contacts both in the United States and Europe. The diary also includes a handwritten calendar marking off the days of Annan’s service. Several items had been inserted into the diary, including a typed transcript of the diaries first few entries, a hand drawn map, a draft of an entry made on scrap paper that appears in the journal, a map of the area in which Annan served printed on a post card, and a newspaper article that mentions Annan and some of his fellow drivers.

Several inserts, found placed inside diary pages, were scanned separately. They include a newspaper clipping (Digital ID: 1_093_1), a map with annotations (Digital ID: 1_093_2), additional details on the September 27, 1917 diary entry (Digital ID: 1_093_3), and a partial transcription from May 1917 diary entries, a hand drawn map, and stationary with the YMCA logo and reference to the American Expeditonary Forces (Digital ID: 1_093_4).

Handwritten diary in 6"x9" bound journal with 238 lined and pre-numbered pages. Pages are written on both sides to page 124. Inside cover inscribed with David Annan's name and address, facing page inscribed with unit number and sketches of ambulances.
