Title:
Evacuating the wounded from Tobruk, Libya
Date:
circa May-June 1942
Description:
There is conflicting documentation regarding the exact date of the photographs related to Tobruk. Arthur Howe, Jr. arrived in Tobruk in May 1942 and while the dates on some of his photographs indicate May 1942, the Battle of Bir Hakim took place between May 26- June 21, 1942. Several sources date the evacuation of the hospital in Tobruk in June 1942. Additionally, it’s unclear when the British Navy Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI) storehouse in Marsa Matruh was emptied in advance of these events, which could have taken place in either May or June 1942.
