Everett Daniels Ripley was born on February 13, 1909, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Charles Everett Ripley and Mary Daniels Ripley. Ripley attended Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, and later went to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.
Ripley applied to become an ambulance driver with the American Field Service (AFS) in March 1943, and served overseas during the Burma Campaign until his repatriation in August 1944. He reapplied to AFS in January 1945 and served with British 14th and 12th Armies. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in July 1945 and advanced to Lieutenant in September. Ripley received the 1939-1945 Star and Burma Star for his service with AFS.
