William K. Du Val Scrapbook Collection, 1943-1948 | Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs

The William K. Du Val Scrapbook Collection contains two bound scrapbooks assembled by Du Val, which document his service as an ambulance driver with AFS in Bombay from 1943-1945 and Burma from 1945-1948. The scrapbooks include photographs (some with handwritten captions) of fellow AFS ambulance drivers, locations significant to AFS (including the AFS headquarters in Pegu), landscapes (including visits to London and Tel Aviv), and local civilians he encountered while serving with AFS. Other items include in the scrapbooks include local currency, letters, booklets, official papers relating to his service with AFS during the war, and a large amount of clippings.  The second scrapbook includes one 1948 letter from Director General Stephen Galatti, inviting Du Val to serve on the Board of Directors of the newly-founded AFS student exchange programs.

Many of the scrapbook items have become loose over the years, and the loose items were left between their original pages by the AFS Archives.  It is usually clear, based on the staining of the acidic glue and the captions, where the loose items once belonged on their respective pages. The exceptions are the items formerly stored between the first page and front cover of the Bombay scrapbook, which are now in a separate folder.
