Abstract
David Stewart Hendrick III was an American Field Service (AFS) ambulance driver during World War II. The David S. Hendrick III Memorabilia Collectioncontains three German medals (an Iron Cross, War Merit medal, and Faithful Service medal) and a pin from the Third Reich, the national flag of the Third Reich (flown over a German tank), a commemorative brass coin from the German Afrika Korps, an unidentified pin, and a clothing or uniform item with "Burma" embroidered in red,all of which were collected during or directly after his service with AFS.
Administrative/Biographical History
David Stewart Hendrick III was born on January 21, 1914, to David Stewart Hendrick, Jr. and Francis Gardner Brown. He was educated in Massachusetts at the Friends Academy (New Bedford), the Tabor Academy (Marion), and the Kinyons Commercial School (New Bedford.) Hendrick was serving as a bank clerk at the First National Bank in New Bedford, Massachusetts, when he volunteered for the American Field Service (AFS) in December 1941. He sailed from New York with unit ME 4 in February 1942, and arrived in the Middle East on April 10, 1942. He served with the British Eighth Army in North Africa and Italy, and with the Fighting French section attached to the British Eighth Army in North Africa before his repatriation in February 1944.
