Administrative/Biographical History
Harry Robeson Perley (b. ca. 1897) entered the American Field Service (AFS), a volunteer ambulance organization serving with the French Army during World War I, in late May 1917. Perley volunteered as an ambulance driver with Section Sanitaire [Etats-] Unis (SSU) 14 in the Champagne area through mid-September 1917, at which time AFS ceased to be an independent organization and was absorbed by the United States (U.S.) Army after the U.S. entered the war. Perley and the other members of SSU 14 then enlisted in the U.S. Army Ambulance Service, whereupon their unit was renamed SSU 632.
After the war, Perley completed his studies at Princeton University and married Christine Mayer. They had one son, Harry R. Perley, Jr.
