Rees Townsend Scully was an American Field Service (AFS) camion driver and second lieutenant in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. The Rees T. Scully Collection contains movement orders and logs, memoranda, newspapers and clippings, postcards, a photograph, and a few items of ephemera related to his time with AFS and the AEF during World War I.
The Rees T. Scully Collection contains movement orders and logs, memoranda, newspapers and clippings, postcards, a photograph, and a few items of ephemera related to his time with the American Field Service (AFS) and American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I.
The bulk of this collection dates to the six months Rees T. Scully served in Transport Matériel [Etats-] Unis TMU 133 of the AFS, between April and October 1917. The majority of the AFS material is comprised of loose pages of Scully’s movement logs, which record the munitions or troops he transported in his camion, departure and arrival times, as well as itineraries for the trips. Also included are a few internal memos from the French Automobile Service and AFS Headquarters in Paris providing orders for Scully’s unit.
The collection also includes newspaper clippings from Scully’s time with the AEF, postcards collected by Scully at an unknown date during his stay in France, a silvered souvenir photograph of the Kaiser decorating troops on October 18, 1918, and a few items of ephemera from post-war AFS events, including a program from a dinner in honor of AFS founder A. Piatt Andrew (April 16, 1919) and a menu from an AFS reunion (December 3, 1920).
