Abstract

David H. Annan was a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Field Service in France between May 19 and September 21, 1917. The David H. Annan Collection consists of Annan’s diary (with related inserts), a mounted photograph of Annan, photocopies of a photograph and newspaper clipping, and a framed AFS certificate.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The David H. Annan Collection consists of his World War I diary (with related inserts), a mounted photograph of Annan in his American Field Service (AFS) uniform, photocopies of a photograph showing Annan during his World War II service and newspaper clipping, and a framed AFS certificate.

The diary contains daily entries written by Annan between May 14, 1917 and October 1, 1917, starting with his voyage over to France, continuing through his service with the American Field Service, and documenting his trip home. The back of the diary contains names and addresses of contacts both in the United States and Europe. The diary also includes a handwritten calendar marking off the days of Annan’s service. Several items had been inserted into the diary, including a typed transcription of diary entries from May 1917, a hand drawn map, blank stationary with the YMCA logo and reference to the American Expeditionary Forces, additional notes for the September 27, 1917 entry made on scrap paper, a map of the area in which Annan served with his annotations, and a newspaper article that mentions Annan and some of his fellow drivers.
