David H. Annan was a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Field Service in France between May 19 and September 21, 1917. The David H. Annan Collection consists of Annan’s diary (with related inserts), a mounted photograph of Annan, photocopies of a photograph and newspaper clipping, and a framed AFS certificate.
The David H. Annan Collection consists of his World War I diary (with related inserts), a mounted photograph of Annan in his American Field Service (AFS) uniform, photocopies of a photograph showing Annan during his World War II service and newspaper clipping, and a framed AFS certificate.
The diary contains daily entries written by Annan between May 14, 1917 and October 1, 1917, starting with his voyage over to France, continuing through his service with the American Field Service, and documenting his trip home. The back of the diary contains names and addresses of contacts both in the United States and Europe. The diary also includes a handwritten calendar marking off the days of Annan’s service. Several items had been inserted into the diary, including a typed transcription of diary entries from May 1917, a hand drawn map, blank stationary with the YMCA logo and reference to the American Expeditionary Forces, additional notes for the September 27, 1917 entry made on scrap paper, a map of the area in which Annan served with his annotations, and a newspaper article that mentions Annan and some of his fellow drivers.

Access Restrictions: This collection is open for research. Researchers must consult any digital copies of original items first; permission to access original items in person is required in advance. Cotton gloves are required for the handling of all photographic material.

Permission to publish material from the collectionoutside the guidelines of U.S. Fair Use (17 U.S.C., Section 107)must be submitted in writing to the Archives. In the event that the collection items become a source for publication, a credit line indicating the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs is required. Acquisition Source: This collection was donated in two accruals to the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs in 2014 and 2015 by David Annan’s daughter, Barbara Annan.
